Tangier, Chefchaouen and Fes

1. Day 1

   Casablanca to Tangier, and the medina

   Overnight: Tangier

   On arrival

   Mohammed V airport

   Met at Casablanca and driven north to Tangier. It is a long first leg, so what follows depends on your arrival time.

   Afternoon

   The Tangier medina

   Set in the lower part of the city inside fifteenth-century Portuguese walls: stalls, shops, teahouses and riads connected by a weave of narrow lanes.

   Petit Socco

   The little square that was the gathering point for the city’s wealthy and, later, for the writers and artists of its bohemian decades. Now the best place in the medina to sit with a mint tea and watch it go past.

   Kasbah Museum

   At the top of the medina hill, in the former Sultan’s palace. The building earns the visit as much as the collection, which runs from prehistory forward.

   Evening

   Lunch at leisure. Check in, dinner at the hotel. Overnight in Tangier.

2. Day 2

   Cape Spartel, the caves and the Corniche

   Cape Spartel

   The north-westernmost point in Africa, fourteen kilometres out of the city, marked by a lighthouse built by an international coalition that included Morocco, the United States, France and Spain.

   Caves of Hercules

   Below the headland. Legend puts Hercules here on his way to the golden apples of the Hesperides; the cave itself was enlarged over centuries by Berbers quarrying millstones. At the far end an opening cut by the Phoenicians frames the Atlantic in the shape of Africa.

   Afternoon

   The Corniche

   Five kilometres along the Bay of Tangier — sand, a marina, restaurants and clubs, and a view that carries across to the Spanish shore.

   Evening

   Lunch at leisure. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight in Tangier.

3. Day 3

   Over the Rif to Chefchaouen

   Overnight: Chefchaouen

   Morning

   Breakfast at the hotel, then the transfer via Tetouan.

   Afternoon

   The blue city

   Chefchaouen stands between the Rif mountains like a piece of Andalusia that came across the water — cobbled streets, blue houses, craft shops and a quiet that is the whole point of stopping here rather than passing through.

   Evening

   Lunch at leisure. Dinner and overnight in Chefchaouen.

4. Day 4

   Chefchaouen, then on to Fes

   Overnight: Fes

   Morning

   Breakfast at the hotel.

   Half day

   Chefchaouen on foot

   The compact medina washed in blue and topped with red tiled roofs, nestled in the Rif — an hour or two of walking covers it, and the earlier you start the better it looks.

   Afternoon

   Lunch at leisure, then the road to Fes.

   Evening

   Dinner and overnight in Fes.

5. Day 5

   Fes, half day in the medina

   Overnight: Fes

   Morning

   Breakfast at the hotel.

   Half day

   Fes el-Bali

   The oldest cultural and spiritual city in Morocco, starting in the medieval medina founded in the eighth century. The Andalusian and al-Qarawiyyin mosques, the madrasas that were religious schools and universities in the Middle Ages, and the Nejjarine fountain.

   The medina and souks

   The rest of the day works through the covered lanes and the trades that still fill them.

   Evening

   Dinner and overnight in Fes.

6. Day 6

   Departure

   Morning

   Breakfast at the hotel.

   Departure transfer to suit your flight.
