About this trip

The seven-night circuit with the pressure taken off it. The same opening — Casablanca, Rabat, Meknes, Volubilis and a guided day in Fes — but Marrakech gets four nights instead of three, and the extra one buys a day trip west to Essaouira.

Essaouira is the counterweight to everything before it: a small walled town on the Atlantic that has been Phoenician, Carthaginian, Roman and Portuguese in turn and has stayed stubbornly itself, with an eighteenth-century harbour and an empty run of sand heading south. It is a long drive from Marrakech and worth every hour of it.

What you go for

  • A day on the Atlantic at Essaouira, out and back from Marrakech
  • Volubilis and Meknes between Rabat and Fes
  • A full guided day in Fes el-Bali
  • The Ourika Valley and the waterfalls at Setti Fatma

    Quartier Habous

The new medina: a mix of French and Moroccan architecture built as a single piece.

    Afternoon

    Rabat

Lunch at leisure, then the drive to the administrative capital for an orientation tour — the Royal Palace, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, the Hassan Tower, the Kasbah of the Oudayas and Chellah, closing in the medina and its souks.

    Overnight: Fes

    Afternoon

    The craftsmen’s quarters

After a traditional Moroccan lunch on your own account, on through the old medina past craftsmen working to the old methods.

    Evening

    Dinner and overnight in Fes.

  5. Day 5

    Fes to Marrakech

    Overnight: Marrakech

    Full day

    Full day

Lunch at leisure, then the souks and the craftsmen’s quarter, finishing at Jemaa el-Fna.

    Into the Atlas foothills

Up the Ourika valley through mountain villages, stopping where the colour is worth stopping for.

    Setti Fatma

Streams, seven waterfalls, cliffs and green terraces still farmed the medieval way. A local guide walks you to the first waterfall.

Lunch at a restaurant over the mountains, then back to Marrakech by around 1700.

    Evening

Dinner at an Indian restaurant. Overnight in Marrakech.

    Overnight: Marrakech

    Morning

    Full day

    Essaouira, formerly Mogador

A town the Phoenicians and Carthaginians occupied, that supplied purple dye to Rome, absorbed a Jewish silversmithing tradition and spent centuries as a Portuguese enclave — and stayed a small Berber town through all of it. An introductory tour covers the harbour and the walls, with the Atlantic wind and an empty run of sand heading south.
