About this trip

The longest package and the only one that reaches the Red Sea properly. It follows the same spine as Quintessential Jordan — Amman, the King's Highway, two nights at Petra, a night in a Wadi Rum camp — and then, instead of turning north, carries on down to Aqaba for two nights, a glass-bottom boat over the coral and a day with nothing in it.

The Dead Sea gets two nights and a free day at the end as well, which makes this the only itinerary in the set with genuine slack. Four of the ten days have no driving in them at all.

What you go for

  • Two nights at Petra and a full day inside the site
  • Little Petra and a two-hour Bedouin jeep tour into Wadi Rum, with a night under canvas
  • Two nights at Aqaba on the Red Sea, with a glass-bottom boat over the coral
  • Free days at both Aqaba and the Dead Sea, with no vehicle and nothing scheduled

The route

Day by day

Times are the operator's planned schedule. They shift with the season, the light and the traffic on the day.

  1. Day 1

    Arrival in Amman

    Queen Alia International Airport

Met off the aircraft by our representative, through the visa formalities and baggage reclaim, then the transfer into Amman.

Check in at your hotel in Amman.

  2. Day 2

    Jerash, then downtown Amman

    Morning

    Breakfast at the hotel.

    Jerash

The Roman city forty-five kilometres north: paved and colonnaded streets, hilltop temples, theatres, public squares and plazas, baths, fountains and the city walls. Your guide has up to two hours here.

    Afternoon

    Downtown Amman

Two hours in the old capital — the Citadel, the amphitheatre below it, and the Archaeological and Folklore museums. Closed on Tuesdays.

    Evening

    Back to the hotel.

  3. Day 3

Madaba, Mount Nebo and Kerak, then Petra

    Overnight: Petra

    Morning

Breakfast, then south on the King's Highway.

    Madaba

The sixth-century mosaic map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land in the floor of St George's church, and the town's Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics.

    Mount Nebo

Ten kilometres west of Madaba, over the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea and the West Bank, and by tradition the burial place of Moses.

    Kerak

A twelfth-century Crusader castle along a triangular plateau.

    Evening

Arrive in Wadi Musa and check in for two nights.

  4. Day 4

    Petra, all day

    Overnight: Petra

    Morning

    Breakfast at the hotel.

    Full day

    Petra

The kilometre-long Siq under eighty-metre walls, the Treasury at the end of it, then the Street of Facades, the rock-cut tombs, the Roman-style theatre, the temples, the sacrificial altars and the colonnaded street. Horse ride to the mouth of the Siq included, guide as far as Qasr al-Bint, and the rest of the day is yours.

    Evening

    Second night in Wadi Musa.

  5. Day 5

Little Petra, and into Wadi Rum

    Overnight: Wadi Rum

    Morning

    Breakfast at the hotel.

    Little Petra

Siq al-Barid, the cold canyon, known locally as Al Beidha for the pale rock. Three open areas linked by a canyon 450 metres long, with Nabataean buildings cut into the sandstone. Part of the Petra Archaeological Park but entered separately.

    Afternoon

    Wadi Rum by jeep

A two-hour Bedouin jeep tour across the desert floor between the sandstone massifs, finishing at the camp.

    Evening

Dinner at the camp and the night under canvas.

  6. Day 6

Down to Aqaba, and out over the coral

    Overnight: Aqaba

    Morning

Breakfast at the camp, then the transfer to Aqaba.

    Afternoon

    Glass-bottom boat

Out into the Gulf of Aqaba: an hour of snorkelling and an hour over the coral.

    Evening

Check in at Aqaba for two nights.

  7. Day 7

    A free day at Aqaba

    Overnight: Aqaba

    Morning

    Breakfast at the hotel.

    Full day

Nothing scheduled and no vehicle. Aqaba is the country's only Red Sea coast, and the reef starts close enough in to swim to.

  8. Day 8

    Aqaba to the Dead Sea

    Overnight: Dead Sea

    Morning

Breakfast, and free time until a midday check-out.

    Afternoon

North up the valley to the Dead Sea, 55 kilometres south-east of Amman and 430 metres below sea level.

    Evening

    Check in for two nights.

  9. Day 9

A free day at the Dead Sea

    Overnight: Dead Sea

    Morning

    Breakfast at the hotel.

    Full day

Nothing scheduled and no vehicle. The water is around ten times as salty as the ocean, so the swimming is really floating.

  10. Day 10

    Departure

Breakfast, then the transfer from the Dead Sea to Queen Alia International Airport. The operator times it to put you at the terminal three and a half hours before your flight.
