About this trip

The shortest package that actually crosses the country. You sleep in four different places in five nights, working south from Amman down the King's Highway to Petra, on into Wadi Rum for a night in a Bedouin camp, then down to the Dead Sea to finish.

The trade is depth for coverage. Petra gets one day rather than two and Wadi Rum gets a two-hour jeep run rather than a full one, but nothing important is missing and no day is wasted. If you would rather slow down, Quintessential Jordan adds two nights and gives Petra and the Dead Sea a second day each.

Day by day

Times are the operator's planned schedule. They shift with the season, the light and the traffic on the day.

Day 1
Arrival in Amman
Queen Alia International Airport
Our representative meets you off the aircraft with a sign, takes the passports through the visa formalities and walks you to baggage reclaim before the transfer into the city.
Check in at your hotel in Amman. The rest of the evening falls where your flight puts it.
Day 2
Amman, then Jerash
Morning
Breakfast at the hotel.
Downtown Amman
Two hours through the old capital: the Citadel, the amphitheatre below it, and the Archaeological and Folklore museums. Closed on Tuesdays.
Afternoon
Jerash
Forty-five kilometres north, and the reason Jerash is called the Pompeii of the East is that it was never built over. Gerasa was one of the Decapolis cities, and you walk in through Hadrian's Arch past the hippodrome to the oval plaza and the colonnaded street. The temples of Artemis and Zeus stand above it, with the nymphaeum, the Roman theatre and fourteen Byzantine churches below, and Umayyad and Mamluk building on top of all of it.

Back to Amman.
Day 3
The King's Highway to Petra
Overnight: Petra
Morning
Breakfast, then south on the King's Highway rather than the Desert Highway.
Madaba
St George's church holds a sixth-century mosaic map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land, laid in the floor. The town's Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics are the reason to stop.
Mount Nebo
Ten kilometres west of Madaba, looking out over the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea and the West Bank. It is where Moses is held to have been shown the land, and by tradition where he is buried.
Kerak
A Crusader castle from the twelfth century, built along a triangular plateau with the ground falling away on two sides.
Evening
Arrive in Wadi Musa and check in for the night.
Day 4
Petra, then into Wadi Rum
Overnight: Wadi Rum
Morning
Breakfast at the hotel.
Petra
In through the Siq — a kilometre of gorge under eighty-metre walls — to the Treasury, then the Street of Facades, the rock-cut tombs, the theatre, the temples and the colonnaded street. The short horse ride to the mouth of the Siq is included, and your guide covers the walk to Qasr al-Bint.
Afternoon
South into Wadi Rum, and out across the sand to the camp.
Evening
Dinner at the camp and the night under canvas. This is the one night of the five on half board.
Day 5
Wadi Rum by jeep, then down to the Dead Sea
Overnight: Dead Sea
Morning
Breakfast at the camp.
Bedouin jeep tour
Two hours across the desert floor between the sandstone massifs. Lawrence, who came through here in 1917, called it vast and echoing; the local name is the Valley of the Moon.
Afternoon
The Dead Sea
North again and down, to 430 metres below sea level. The water is roughly ten times as salty as the ocean, which is why you float in it rather than swim.
Evening
Check in at the Dead Sea for the last night.
Day 6
Departure
Morning
Breakfast, and a free morning at the Dead Sea.
Transfer to Queen Alia International Airport. The operator times it to put you at the terminal three and a half hours before your flight.
