About this trip

The shortest of the five packages and the only one that never changes hotel. You sleep in Amman for all three nights and reach Petra, Jerash and the Dead Sea as day trips, which means two long days in the car and a great deal of country covered in very little time.

It suits a long weekend out of Dubai more than a first proper look at Jordan. There is no Wadi Rum and no night in the desert. If you want either, the five-night Gems of Jordan is the next step up and adds both.

Day by day

Times are the operator's planned schedule. They shift with the season, the light and the traffic on the day.

Day 1
Arrival at Queen Alia, and Amman on foot
Queen Alia International Airport
Our representative is waiting as you come off the aircraft, holding a sign with your name. He takes the passports, clears the visa formalities, then walks you through to baggage reclaim and out to the vehicle.
Afternoon
Downtown Amman
Two hours through the oldest part of the capital: the Citadel on its hill, the Roman amphitheatre cut into the slope below, and the Archaeological and Folklore museums on the same walk. The museums close on Tuesdays.
Check in at your hotel in Amman.
If your flight lands in the evening, this city tour moves to the departure day instead.
Day 2
Petra, by the Desert Highway
Morning
Breakfast at the hotel, then south to Wadi Musa on the Desert Highway.
Full day
Petra
The Nabataean capital, cut into rose sandstone, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New7Wonders of the World. You enter through the Siq, a gorge a kilometre long with walls up to eighty metres on either side, which opens without warning onto the Treasury. Past it the site runs for miles — hundreds of rock-cut tombs, the Street of Facades, a Roman-style theatre, temples, sacrificial altars and a colonnaded street. A short horse ride from the visitor centre to the mouth of the Siq is included, and your local guide walks you as far as Qasr al-Bint.

Back to Amman for the night.
Day 3
Jerash, then the Dead Sea
Morning
Breakfast at the hotel.
Jerash
The Roman city north of Amman, and the least ruined one in Jordan: paved and colonnaded streets, hilltop temples, theatres, public squares and plazas, baths, fountains and the city walls. Your guide has up to two hours here.
Afternoon
The Dead Sea
Down into the Jordan Valley, 55 kilometres south-east of Amman and the lowest point on land anywhere. Entry to the Holiday Inn Dead Sea is included, with the resort beach and pools and free time to float. The water is around ten times as salty as the ocean, which is why nobody in it is swimming.
Evening
Back to Amman for the night.
Day 4
Departure
Breakfast at the hotel, then the transfer to Queen Alia International Airport. The operator times it to put you at the terminal three and a half hours before your flight.
Where the flight leaves late in the day, the Amman city tour is moved here from day one.
